What is a "habitude"?

A “habitude” is the automatic or subconscious thoughts and feelings (attitudes) and behaviors (habits) that are ingrained in our minds over time and influence our decisions and actions.

What is the purpose or goal of Money Habitudes cards?

Money Habitudes cards are designed to help people engage in productive conversations about money and understand the habits and attitudes that influence their actions and decisions regarding money.

Why would professionals use Money Habitudes cards?

Money Habitudes cards are a powerful tool to help initiate dialogue between a professional and his or her client(s). They easily go beyond initial assumptions based on superficial data and appearances without the professional having to ask probing personal questions.

They're very effective as a shortcut to access relevant, often hidden, information in a quick, fun, non-threatening way.

And, they allow the professional to gain insight on how to successfully approach a client and identify triggers that will be relevant and motivating.

What makes Money Habitudes cards so user friendly and non-threatening?

The Money Habitudes cards are designed to be similar to playing cards, which are intuitive to use and generally associated with an enjoyable, social activity that helps people relax and engage more quickly. The language on the cards is non-judgmental and jargon free. And although these cards accomplish what a questionnaire might do in terms of assessment results, they're far more effective because they're user friendly are not associated with negative test-taking experiences.  The Money Habitudes cards are thought provoking and trigger more effective communication about their habits and attitudes- whether it be with an advisor, counselor or their family or friends.

Who uses Money Habitudes cards?

Financial professionals use Money Habitudes cards to gain insight into an individual's patterns of behaviors and values that influence the way he or she makes decisions about investing, saving, spending, giving money away and going into debt.  When working with couples, the cards provide a quick, non-intrusive way of discovering if their money habitudes balance, complement or conflict with each other's.

Counselors, therapists and coaches use Money Habitudes cards to explore a client's relationship with money and determine how that may influence their actions regarding their career, relationships, transitions, and other life issues. Since the relationship with money can be a metaphor for the person's relationship with other life issues, the cards can provide a shortcut to other issues.

Individuals use the cards to understand how they can take charge of their financial future and see where old habits and attitudes may be supporting or sabotaging their intentions.
Couples use the cards to understand where they complement and conflict with each others' habits and attitudes, which gives them a strong foundation to talk about important financial issues productively, using the non-judgmental, common language provided by the cards.

They can be used in-conjunction with programs in financial literacy, life skills, psychology or business to help teens develop a healthier relationship with money.

Money Habitudes cards can be used to do a number of activities, the most common of which is Money Habitude Solitaire. It's as easy as 3 basic steps. To give you an idea of how simple and intuitive it is, here are the steps:

1) Shuffle the 54 statement cards. Place each card under the blue sorting cards ("that's me," "that's not me," "that's sometimes me") depending on what the card says. (The teen cards are the same format, but the words and graphics are teen-friendly.)

2) Flip the cards over in the "that's me" pile and sort them by the colorful pictures on the back.

3) Use the yellow interpretation cards to understand your habitudes, starting with the habitude that you have the most cards for.

Are the cards valid and reliable?

Money Habitudes cards are intended to engage people in conversation and to stimulate exploration of habits and attitudes about money from different perspectives. The categories are well researched. However, the cards are not intended to be a serious assessment or psychological instrument with which to categorize or diagnose individuals. The categories and statements are based on the most common themes, patterns and findings in current financial and psychological research. Data collected during focus groups and from professionals who reviewed the cards during their development indicated that people typically did identify with the outcomes of their card sort. However, the more important point was that even when someone disagreed with or questioned the results, the conversation and information from that exchange provided helpful insights.

How much time does the Money Habitudes card activity take?

It typically takes less than 15 minutes for an individual to do the Money Habitudes Solitaire card sort. Beyond that, interpreting the cards takes another 15 minutes and discussing them takes as much time as the user is interested in dedicating to the activity and determining next steps. The benefits of understanding or even simply thinking about one's money habitudes, however, last indefinitely.

How many decks of Money Habitudes cards do you need?

Although Money Habitudes cards can be shared, it's more powerful and time efficient for each person to have his or her own deck - whether working with individuals, couples or groups. This is because people are more engaged and invested in the conversation if they have their own outcomes and it runs more smoothly when everyone sorts and interprets the cards together. However, the Professional Guide offers suggestions for large and small group activities and discussions using a deck using fewer decks of cards.
