Find Out What Other Counselors, Coaches, Therapists
(and their Clients) Are Saying...
Our relationship with money is often a metaphor for our relationship
with life since money is frequently equated with power, control,
security, freedom, trust and a sense of self-worth. Discovering a
person's relationship with money can be a direct route to uncovering
other important issues. Helping a person understand that relationship
and take control of his
or her money can be a major step in them taking control of their life.
When facing life transitions, such as marriage, children, divorce,
retirement, relocation and job or career changes, people's habits and
attitudes about money can have a major impact on the way they feel and
the actions they take. This becomes even more pronounced when another
person is involved.
Unfortunately, money is a topic that frequently doesn't come up or is
avoided in counseling and coaching sessions. Typically, clients doesn't
see a connection between their habits and attitudes about money and
their relationship, career or self-esteem issues. Often, the
professional is not comfortable introducing and exploring the topic of
finances and money management or doesn't think to bring it up in the
discussion.
Money Habitudes is an easy, non-judgmental and non-threatening familiar
activity that makes it easy to discuss this potentially difficult topic.
You can also quickly gain important information and insight about other
life issues from conversations relating to money.
Money Habitudes Solitaire is the most frequently used activity. The deck
of cards includes 54 statement cards that are associated with one of the
six Money Habitudes: Security, Status, Selfless, Free Spirit, Targeted
Goals and Spontaneous. The client completes a simple sorting process,
placing cards into piles identifying behaviors as "like me," "not like
me" or "sometimes like me" (a process that takes about 15 minutes). At a
glance, you and your client will get a sense of the Money Habitudes that
are dominant. By using the interpretation cards, you will gain valuable
clues about thoughts, feelings and patterns of behavior. The cards also
include suggestions for next steps based on each habitude. The Money
Habitudes Guide for Professionals also offers questions and activities
for more in-depth conversations.
The cards also offer insight for you as a professional and your
business. The Money Habitudes Guide for Professionals includes the
following information for counselors and coaches:
