Money Habitudes for Teens

or charity when he or she died. Or a person who struck it rich by winning the lottery or inheriting a lot of money…only to be in debt a few years later. Or people who live in an expensive house and enjoys a lavish lifestyle but are deep in debt and are avoiding creditors' calls.

What's going with people? Why do we do what we do with money? The fact is that the amount of money you have is more of a function of how you choose to save and spend it than how much you earn! Once you become aware of your hidden habits and attitudes about money that influence your decisions, you may be surprised at ways you can take control!

To learn about your underlying money issues, play Money Habitudes Solitaire. The cards are fun, easy to use and can help you answer questions you've been asking yourself like:
  • Why don't I follow through with my plan to save and invest for the future?

  • Why don't I go and talk to someone to help me get my finances in order?

  • Why do I spend money on things that really aren't all that important to me?

  • Why do I charge things knowing I can't pay for them?

  • Why do people think I'm cheap?

  • Why can't I enjoy spending my money on fun things like other people do?

  • What's keeping me from reaching my goals?

  • Why is money causing so many arguments in our family?

Here's how it works:

Sort. Turn over the three cards that say "that’s me", "that’s not me" and "that's sometimes me". Shuffle the statement cards and after you read each one, place it under the card that best describes your reaction to it.

Review. When you're done sorting, turn over the "that's me" pile and sort them by the pictures on the back of the cards.

Interpret. Read the user-friendly yellow interpretation cards for any habitude for which you have four or more cards. That is your dominant habitude(s). Are you missing any habitudes? Read that yellow interpretation card to see how missing the habitudes you have and don't have may affect you.

That's it - simple but powerful!

What Individuals Who Have Used Money Habitudes Cards Are Saying...

I like these cards! They really cut to the chase quickly.

I shared my cards with my partner. It's a new relationship but I was not surprised by her cards. We had a good discussion on what matters to us and why.

It's the first time my husband and I have had a productive conversation about money in all the years we've been married. It's hard to admit, but I always thought he was just plain cheap. I never really realized how thoughtful he actually was about the way he decides to spend and save money.

Very cool. Looks like I have a good balance and am heading in the right direction with the way I think about money.

I had lots of targeted goal cards and all my security cards were in the "that's not me" pile. I live well and have no debt but never really thought about preparing for the future. After doing the cards I started to contribute to a retirement fund at work and am looking to buy a house as an investment instead of renting.

I always said money wasn't important to me. The cards helped me realize that my low salary is more of a reflection of not asking for more money and only going for "safe" jobs. I'm determined to change that and am starting by taking a course in assertiveness training!

My parents always told me that I was headstrong, irresponsible and acted without thinking. I was shocked that my dominant habitude was "targeted goals". The more I thought about how I have made decisions these past ten years I realized I am very responsible and have made excellent investments. It gave me a totally new perspective of myself that I like!

I never over-did it, but felt very comfortable spending money to enjoy myself. I couldn't believe when my cards in the "that's me" pile didn't have one spontaneous card or free spirit card and had so many security cards! My first reaction was that's not me at all, but then I started thinking that two years ago I had a crisis in my life. I stopped doing anything that cost money and totally withdrew from most social situations. The cards made me stop and think that I have continued to penny pinch and say "no" even though my circumstances have changed.

I couldn't believe that I got almost all spontaneous and free spirit cards. It was true, I was always running out of money, had debt that I hid from my husband and I had no idea how much money we had in savings. I was a recovering alcoholic and I thought once I stopped drinking these other problems would go away too. They didn't. The cards made me realize I needed help with a bigger problem. I was seeing a counselor and we started addressing the money issues. Things are getting better. I even had the courage to tell my husband about my debt.
